India’s telecom watchdog has a big win on its hands: over 600,000 lost and stolen mobile phones have been recovered through the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) Sanchar Saathi portal. The government shared this update on Tuesday, highlighting how the platform’s “Block Your Lost/Stolen Mobile Handset” tool has hit a major milestone and boosted public faith in digital services.
This success shows the government’s strong push to safeguard people’s digital belongings and fight cyber threats using smart tech. Sanchar Saathi brings together the DoT, telecom companies, and police across states and union territories for real-time action. Built around the idea of “Digital by Design,” it helps recover about one phone every minute.
If you’ve lost or had your mobile stolen, the portal makes it easy to report it, block the device, track it, or even unblock it once found—all across India’s telecom networks. Once reported, the phone gets blocked nationwide to stop any fraud. And here’s the clever part: if someone pops a SIM into that lost or stolen handset, the system automatically flags it, sends alerts to you and the nearest police station where you filed the complaint, and texts you the contact details for follow-up.
These efforts are paying off big time. Monthly recoveries jumped from 28,115 phones in January 2024 to 45,243 in August 2024—a solid 61% rise in just eight months. Launched in May 2023, Sanchar Saathi has grown into India’s top digital safety hub, with more than 190 million visits to its website and over 9 million downloads of its mobile app. It’s all about creating a safer online world where tech empowers everyday people.
