EAM Jaishankar joins G4 Foreign Ministers in New York, reaffirms call for UN reforms

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar joined forces with top diplomats from Japan, Germany, and Brazil at the G4 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York. The group pushed hard for major changes to the United Nations, focusing on revamping the UN Security Council to make it more modern and inclusive.

Jaishankar shared the details on X, saying he’s glad to team up with Japan’s Takeshi Iwaya, Germany’s Johann Wadephul, and Brazil’s Mauro Vieira. The G4 nations reaffirmed their call for UN reforms, including updates to the Security Council. They also reviewed progress in the ongoing Inter-Governmental Negotiation process, known as IGN.

These countries want a bigger Security Council that better matches today’s global landscape. That means more spots for developing nations to have a real voice in world affairs.

During the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York, Jaishankar squeezed in one-on-one talks with key figures. He met Australia’s Senator Penny Wong, Egypt’s Dr. Badr Abdelatty, and Malaysia’s Mohamad Haji Hasan to discuss shared interests.

Earlier, Jaishankar made a strong pitch to G20 ministers about India’s Operation Sindoor, a bold move against terrorist hideouts in Pakistan earlier this year. Without naming it directly, he stressed that fighting terrorism helps everyone. “Those who take on terrorists are doing a huge favor for the whole world,” he told the group, highlighting how terrorist networks threaten global peace and progress.

Terrorism, he added, constantly disrupts development and stability. “The world must show zero tolerance for it—no room for excuses or leniency.”

India led the G20 group of major economies last year and passed the baton to South Africa this year. Jaishankar also called out inconsistent sanctions aimed at pressuring Russia over the Ukraine war. While he didn’t point fingers at the U.S., his words hit close to home after India faced tariffs for buying Russian oil. These measures, he said, mess with supplies, shipping, access, and costs, putting extra strain on countries worldwide.
