Taiwan detects Chinese military activity near its territory

Taiwan’s defense ministry spotted six Chinese military planes, seven navy ships, and two official vessels circling its waters early Sunday morning. This comes just a day after a larger show of force from Beijing.

As of 6 a.m. local time, five of those six People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait. They flew into Taiwan’s northern, southwestern, and eastern air defense identification zones (ADIZ), areas where Taiwan keeps a close watch on potential threats. The ministry said on X, formerly Twitter, that it monitored the activity and responded accordingly.

The day before, on Saturday, things ramped up even more. Taiwan detected 19 PLA aircraft, alongside the same seven navy vessels and two official ships. Fifteen of those planes breached the median line, entering the northern, central, and southwestern ADIZ. Again, the ministry reported tracking everything and taking action.

These back-to-back China military incursions highlight the growing tensions between Taiwan and mainland China. For years, Beijing has viewed Taiwan as a breakaway province that must reunite with the mainland under its “One China” policy. Taiwan, however, runs its own government, economy, and military, and most people there support staying independent.

The roots of this Taiwan-China conflict go back to 1949, after China’s civil war. When communist forces won control of the mainland, the defeated Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan. Since then, China has used military drills, diplomatic pressure, and economic moves to push for unification. Taiwan pushes back by bolstering its defenses and sharing these updates publicly to stay transparent about national security.

Experts see these frequent PLA aircraft flights and navy patrols as a way for China to test Taiwan’s responses and signal its resolve. As the island navigates these challenges, it counts on support from allies like the U.S. to maintain the status quo in the region.
