Broadcom announced on Friday it will roll out a new high‑performance networking chip this year. The move comes as the company ramps up competition with Nvidia over AI‑driven data‑center hardware.

The new chip, called the “Stream‑X,” is built to deliver ultra‑fast data transfer for AI workloads and cloud services. Broadcom claimed it can handle up to 200 terabits per second, a speed that rivals Nvidia’s latest “Hopper” GPU and the company’s recently launched “NVIDIA AI Data‑Center Station.”

“We’re bringing a next‑generation networking solution that powers the AI era,” said Broadcom CEO Surya Narayanan in a press release. “Stream‑X will help customers move data at record speeds, giving them a real advantage in machine learning and 5G deployments.”

Industry analysts see the launch as a direct response to Nvidia’s push into the networking space. Nvidia has been adding AI‑specific networking layers to its GPUs, a strategy that has shifted the battle from conventional GPUs to integrated AI platforms. Broadcom’s new chip will allow data‑center operators to keep all the traffic moving at breakneck speeds while simplifying the architecture of AI systems.

The chip will be available with Broadcom’s new “Connect‑AI” software stack, a debut product that tightly integrates with the company’s 700‑Series switches. It’s expected to launch in the second quarter of next year, and Broadcom is targeting enterprises that run the biggest AI pipelines, from cloud giants to automotive OEMs.

Experts predict that the Stream‑X could pressure Nvidia to further diversify its product line. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang said that their company is “focused on pushing the limit of AI performance,” implying that the two firms will continue to have a rivalry over control of the high‑speed networking market.

Broadcom’s new networking chip is part of a larger strategy to capture more of the data‑center market. In 2023, the company generated $27.1 billion in revenue, a mix of networking, wireless, and enterprise software. The firm says it now expects the network equipment segment to account for more than half of that figure in 2025.

For companies that already use Broadcom’s 800‑Series switches, the new chip offers a smooth upgrade path. Data‑center operators in the cloud, telecom, and finance sectors are already looking at the price‑performance gains the Stream‑X could bring. Broadcom expects the new chip will drive demand for its next‑generation 400G switches, creating a broader ecosystem for high‑speed AI data traffic.

While the competition with Nvidia intensifies, Broadcom remains optimistic. “We are ready to lead the next wave of AI networking,” said Surya Narayanan. “With Stream‑X and our supported software stack, businesses can run larger models faster and at a lower cost.”
