Amit Shah Launches Trusted Traveller Programme at Five New Airports
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken a big step to make travel easier for Indians and visitors. On Thursday, he expanded the Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) to five more airports: Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Trichy, Calicut, and Amritsar. This move promises quicker immigration checks, cutting down hassle and boosting tourism across India.
Speaking at the virtual launch, Shah highlighted how the programme aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of "speed, scale, and scope." He said, "This scheme gives a great chance to show visitors the amazing changes happening in our country." It’s all about building trust through technology while ensuring more people use these fast services.
Interestingly, the launch happened on a special day—exactly 132 years after Swami Vivekananda’s iconic speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. That address introduced the world to India’s rich culture and Sanatan Dharma, sparking a cultural revival that continues today. Shah called it a "happy coincidence" tying India’s global outreach to modern travel perks.
So, what exactly is the Trusted Traveller Programme? It’s a government initiative that speeds up immigration for pre-approved travelers, like Indian nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders. Forget long queues—the programme uses biometric e-gates with fingerprints and facial scans to clear you in seconds, down from the usual 30 minutes.
To join, you simply register online and submit your biometric details to airports or the Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRRO) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It started as a free service and has already rolled out at several major airports. The government plans to extend it to nearly two dozen spots soon, making airport immigration faster, safer, and smoother for everyone.
This expansion is set to supercharge tourism in India by attracting more travelers who want a seamless experience. If you’re a frequent flyer, keep an eye on the official website for registration details—it’s your ticket to hassle-free journeys!
