Facebook takes down page that Justice Department says was used to harass ICE agents

Facebook removed a public page that the U.S. Justice Department says was used to harass Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The action comes after federal officials warned the company that the page encouraged violent speech against law‑enforcement officers and threatened the safety of ICE employees.

The Justice Department’s complaint states the page, which had more than 400 followers, regularly posted calls for violence, shared false stories about ICE agents and urged fans to “take pictures” of agents in the field and release them online. Human Right organizations have cited the page as a site where users organized harassment campaigns against federal agents.

Facebook’s policy says it will remove content that “promotes or celebrates violence against a group or targeted individuals.” The company confirmed that it had banned the page on Thursday following an internal review that matched the allegations in the DOJ filing. The removal notice at the time said the page “engaged in harassment and was a threat to ICE agents.”

The federal lawsuit includes the page’s admin, a resident of California, who faces charges for conspiracy to commit federal offenses and for soliciting others to commit violent acts. The lawsuit claims the profane posts were part of an organized plan to intimidate ICE workers and has broader implications for the limits of free expression on social media.

The decision is part of a larger trend of tech companies checking the internet for extremist content. After Facebook’s removal, other platforms such as Twitter and TikTok are being asked by the DOJ to take similar action against pages that terrorize or threaten frontline workers. State officials have joined the federal push, warning that online harassment can lead to real‑world harm.

For workers, the ruling gives ICE more protection from targeted attacks coming from anonymous online forums. For users, it signals that the Justice Department will be more active in cutting off social media spaces that are used to spread violent propaganda. The removal also raises debate about how to balance free speech rights with law‑enforcement security concerns.

Overall, the incident shines a light on the growing effort to hold social media companies accountable for content that poses a threat to public safety, while still keeping open spaces for legitimate criticism. The move signals that Facebook is stepping up its enforcement against extremist harassment sites that target agents and potentially reduce violence on the front lines.
