Foreign investors flipped from heavy sellers to net buyers in the Indian stock market between October 6 and 10, boosting the market with a fresh inflow of ₹1,751 crore‑worth of shares, according to National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) data.
The week began with a sharp sell‑off: on October 6 investors pulled ₹1,584.48 crore from the market, followed by another ₹1,471.74 crore on October 7. But from October 8 to 10, the trend turned. Buyers added ₹1,663.65 crore, ₹737.82 crore, and ₹2,406.54 crore, producing a net cumulative inflow of ₹1,751.79 crore for the period.
Senior Vice President Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking told that the shift shows improving foreign‑investor sentiment toward Indian equities. “Global stability, coupled with domestic resilience, is making investors more confident,” Mishra said. He added that steady inflows could strengthen the market trend, as long as global risk appetite and corporate earnings remain solid.
Despite the winding up of a costly sell‑off, domestic institutional investors have kept the market steady, absorbing foreign outflows and providing a stabilising hand for the wider market.
Why the reversal matters
- After a year‑long slide of foreign outflows totalling ₹156,611 crore from Indian markets, the current week’s inflow is a bright sign of renewed confidence.
- In October alone, the net outflow has dropped to just ₹2,091 crore—much smaller than September’s ₹23,885 crore net outflow.
- Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) only posted net inflows in April, May, and June of 2025; the rest of the year saw net selling, with January’s outflow peaking at ₹78,027 crore.
What’s driving the change?
A mix of factors has eased the pressure on foreign investors: easing Trump tariffs, improving valuations of Indian companies, and a more stable global trade outlook. Yet, the future of this positive trend will hinge on continued corporate earnings growth and the stability of global risk sentiment.
For investors watching the Indian markets, the latest data signals a potential turnaround, but the road ahead remains tied to both domestic performance and global economic conditions.
