India is making big waves in the global tech scene, with nearly half of the world’s Global Capability Centres (GCCs) now calling the country home. These centres are leading the charge in innovation, research and development (R&D), and creating top-notch jobs. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared this exciting update during her speech at the CII GCC Business Summit in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Speaking at the summit’s Special Ministerial Plenary, Sitharaman highlighted how GCCs are set to boost India’s position as an innovation powerhouse. “With the right policies, strong infrastructure, and focused skilling programs, this sector will play a key role in our path to Viksit Bharat 2047,” she said. The event also brought good news for Visakhapatnam, with fresh announcements of GCC investments, including major greenfield projects and expansions. These moves promise thousands of new jobs and will help position Andhra Pradesh as a rising technology hub.

Sitharaman outlined three key pillars driving the growth of GCCs in India: massive investments in infrastructure, education and skilling, and supportive government policies. She pointed out that capital spending as a share of GDP has more than doubled since 2014. This has fueled quick growth in rail networks, metros, highways, 5G rollout, and digital infrastructure, making it easier for businesses to thrive.

On the skilling front, the minister spotlighted the government’s Rs 2 lakh crore package aimed at training over 4 crore young people. She also mentioned initiatives like the PM Internship scheme and the RDI Innovation Fund, which help GCCs access skilled talent and fuel cutting-edge research.

The Finance Minister stressed the need for simpler regulations, competitive taxation, and cooperative federalism, allowing states to build their own GCC ecosystems. She praised Andhra Pradesh as a shining example, especially with the upcoming Google data centre in Visakhapatnam. “This shows how smart policies, strong leadership, and close ties with industry can draw in major investments,” she added.

In his closing address, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu congratulated Sitharaman on the landmark GST reforms and shared his bold vision to turn the state into a global hub for knowledge-based growth. Naidu talked up the Google data centre, the transformation of Amaravati into a greenfield smart city, and investments in green hydrogen, logistics, and modern urban projects like new airports and metros.

He promised full support to every GCC company eyeing Andhra Pradesh, offering help with land, power, skill development, and digital infrastructure to make setup smooth and fast. With these steps, the state is gearing up to attract even more tech giants and drive economic growth.
