Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Google’s biggest investment in India so far, a new AI hub that will sit in Visakhapatnam, a port city in Andhra Pradesh.
On Tuesday, Modi posted on X that the gigawatt‑scale compute infrastructure will help build a “Viksit Bharat” – a developing, technology‑advanced India. He said the project will democratise technology, bring “AI for all” and push the digital economy forward.
Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, had earlier shared a photo of the upcoming hub. He described it as a milestone that combines massive computing power, a new international subsea gateway and a large‑scale energy footprint. Pichai said the hub will deliver Google’s world‑class tools‑from Search to YouTube‑to Indian businesses and users, accelerating growth across the country.
The announcement came during the “Bharat AI Shakti” event in New Delhi, a pre‑summit for the India‑AI Impact Summit 2026. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian called the Visakhapatnam hub a “landmark investment in India’s digital future.”
Once built, the campus will house a purpose‑built data centre with gigawatt‑scale compute capacity. It will join Google’s global network of AI data centres spread across 12 countries. The project will involve key partners such as AdaniConneX and Airtel, and will use the same cutting‑edge infrastructure that powers Google’s Search, Workspace and YouTube services.
For investors and tech observers, the move marks a huge step toward positioning India as a global technology leader, with ambitious plans to bring cutting‑edge AI tools to everyday Indian life and businesses.
