Govt focusing on expediting work on energy storage capacity: MoS Power

India’s government is ramping up efforts to boost energy storage, with a big focus on batteries, to meet its ambitious renewable energy goals. Shripad Yesso Naik, the Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, shared these updates during a chat with at the 6th International Energy Conference and Exhibition in New Delhi.

Naik stressed the need for battery storage, saying, “If we produce electricity but lack batteries, we can’t store it for later use.” This push comes as India aims to handle more solar and wind power, which can fluctuate and need reliable storage for a steady grid.

To make this happen, the government is rolling out key support for battery energy storage systems (BESS). They’ve set aside Rs. 5,400 crore in viability gap funding to kickstart new projects. They’re also waiving inter-state transmission system charges and introducing energy storage obligations (ESOs) to lock in future capacity growth. Plus, a national framework outlines a long-term plan for energy storage systems (ESS) through 2032, targeting grid stability and round-the-clock power supply.

On World Energy Storage Day, marked every September 22, Naik sent his best wishes to everyone. Organized by groups like the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and global partners, the day spotlights how energy storage fuels the shift to sustainable options, including e-mobility and green hydrogen. Conferences and events worldwide help spread the word and drive innovation.

“Energy storage is the need of the hour,” Naik added. It lets the country save up power now and use it when demand peaks. A new scheme to expand this sector is coming soon, but progress is already underway. The government has kicked off work to add 60 gigawatts of storage capacity, and they’ve even floated tenders for it.

By fiscal year 2032, India wants to hit that 60 GW target for energy storage capacity. This includes blending in variable renewable energy sources through incentives like the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for battery manufacturing. Other moves? Setting ESO targets under the updated renewable purchase obligation (RPO) rules, crafting a fresh energy storage policy, and boosting pumped storage projects (PSP).

Overall, these steps aim to create a rock-solid renewable energy future. India is positioning itself as a top global player in battery manufacturing and advanced energy storage solutions, ensuring a greener and more reliable power network as renewable energy expands.
