India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made a strong case for sustainability as the backbone of the country’s rapid growth during a key event in New Delhi. Speaking at the inauguration of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting and Exhibition, organized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Goyal highlighted how high-quality standards are driving India’s economy forward.
“Sustainability is non-negotiable in India’s growth journey,” Goyal declared, emphasizing that India draws lessons from developed nations to build a prosperous future. As the world’s fastest-growing large economy, India sees these standards as essential for national progress and global collaboration.
Goyal pointed out that harmonizing global standards boosts product quality, eases free trade, opens up markets, and fosters international partnerships. This approach creates a level playing field for businesses, expands open markets, and promotes fair trade practices. With experts from around the world attending the event—many from engineering fields—Goyal is optimistic that the discussions will spark fresh ideas on adopting standards worldwide.
He stressed the vital role of standards in consumer welfare, sparking demand, and ensuring long-term growth. India is all-in on a circular economy model, focusing on waste reduction and resource conservation to shape its development path.
Looking back, Goyal explained how India has evolved its standards framework. The country boasts thousands of technical bodies and committees setting rules across sectors. Early on, standards were voluntary, but experience showed the need for stricter enforcement. That’s why the government introduced Quality Control Orders (QCOs) in key areas.
Take toys, for example: QCOs have revolutionized the market by banning substandard imports, boosting local manufacturing of safe, high-quality toys, and protecting children’s health. Goyal tied this to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Zero Defect, Zero Effect” vision, saying the government is pushing a nationwide culture of quality and sustainability in mission mode.
These steps not only strengthen India’s economy but also position it as a leader in global standards and sustainable development.
