Himanshi Tokas becomes first Indian judoka to grab top spot in world junior rankings

Indian Judo Stars Shine Bright: Himanshi Tokas Tops World Junior Rankings

Mumbai’s judo sensation Himanshi Tokas has etched her name in history books! The 20-year-old has climbed to the No.1 spot in the women’s 63kg junior world rankings, becoming the first Indian judoka to achieve this feat. This milestone comes from the latest International Judo Federation (IJF) World Ranking List, where Indian athletes are making waves across categories.

Himanshi, backed by the Reliance Foundation, shot up three places with 610 points. Her big win? Gold at the Asian Junior Championships 2025 on September 13. This marks her third gold this year, following triumphs in the Taipei Junior Asian Cup in July and the Casablanca African Open in January. Overall, she’s grabbed gold in five major events, including one Continental Championship and three Continental Cups. In the senior rankings, she’s holding steady at No.61 in the women’s 63kg with 611 points.

Not to be outdone, another Indian star, Shahin Rajakbhai Darjada, has reached No.4 in the women’s 57kg junior category. This is a historic moment—it’s the first time two Indian judokas have cracked the top five in their weight classes. Shahin, with 442 points, trails Japan’s Riko Honda, Italy’s Michela Terranova, and Brazil’s Bianca Reis. She’s notched three golds and a bronze this season, winning big at the Asian Junior Championships 2025, Macau Junior Asian Cup 2025, and Taipei Junior Asian Cup 2025. Her bronze came from the Tashkent Junior Asian Cup in May.

Indian judo is on a roll in other categories too. In juniors, Kanwarpreet Kaur sits at No.10 in women’s +78kg, Ishroop Narang matches her at No.10 in -78kg, and Nungshithoi Chanu Leishangthem is No.12 in 52kg.

Shifting to seniors, Commonwealth Games bronze winner Tulika Mann jumped one spot to No.75 in women’s +78kg. Shraddha Kadubai Chopade holds No.53 in 52kg, Asmita Dev stays at No.46 in 48kg, and Arun Kumar climbed two places to No.71 in men’s 73kg. In total, seven Indian judokas now rank in the top 100 of the senior world list.

These rankings highlight the growing prowess of Indian judo on the global stage. With talents like Himanshi and Shahin leading the charge, the future looks promising for the sport in India. Keep an eye on these athletes as they gear up for more action!
