The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has stepped in with a strong directive to several digital news publishers. They must remove content targeting Adani Enterprises Limited from platforms like YouTube and Instagram. This action comes after a court order on defamatory material wasn’t followed on time.
In a recent notice, the ministry pointed out that the content was harmful and defamatory. It directly violated a court ruling, so publishers need to act fast. The notice lists prominent names like journalists Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Abhisar Sharma, Ravish Kumar, and Dhruv Rathee, along with platforms such as Newslaundry, The Wire, HW News Network, and The Deshbhakt.
Here’s what the ministry said in the notice: “We’ve noticed the court order hasn’t been followed within the deadline. You must take immediate steps to comply and report back to us within 36 hours.” This follows a defamation lawsuit filed by Adani Enterprises Ltd against Guha Thakurta and others.
Back on September 6, a Delhi court ordered the removal of the alleged defamatory content within five days. The material includes YouTube video transcripts, screenshots from X (formerly Twitter), and images of journalists’ profiles. Since no one removed it in time, the ministry is now enforcing the rules.
Publishers have to delete the content right away and send proof of action within 36 hours. The ministry has also shared the order with tech giants Google and Meta to ensure compliance.
This all stems from an earlier interim court ruling this month in favor of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL). The company accused the journalists, activists, and organizations of spreading false info that aligns with “anti-India interests.” AEL claims these attacks target their key infrastructure and energy projects, which play a big role in India’s growth and security.
The Rohini court made it clear: Remove the defamatory posts from articles or social media, or face consequences. If not, platforms like Google, YouTube, and X must step in and take down the content themselves.
This case highlights the ongoing tension between free speech and defamation laws in India’s digital media space. Stay tuned for updates on how publishers respond.
