IBM and BharatGen have teamed up in a big way to boost Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India. This exciting partnership focuses on creating homegrown AI models that understand India’s languages, culture, and unique needs. Announced on September 18 in New Delhi, the collaboration aims to make AI more accessible and useful for everyone in the country.
BharatGen, which is all about building inclusive AI for India, joins forces with IBM’s top-notch skills in AI development, data handling, and training models. Together, they’re working to develop sovereign AI systems—ones that are truly Indian at heart. These will cover key areas like education, agriculture, healthcare, banking, and public services, helping people solve real-life problems.
Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan from BharatGen shared his excitement: “IBM’s strong enterprise platforms and our focus on AI for public good will drive big changes in India’s digital world. From farming and finance to education and government services, we’re creating AI that captures India’s rich languages, cultural details, and diverse needs.”
As part of this AI collaboration, the two will build ready-to-use templates for Indian scenarios. They’ll blend BharatGen’s models and data with IBM’s powerful tools, like the Granite models. Expect cool demos and practical examples on platforms such as IBM Watsonx and Red Hat OpenShift AI.
The plan also includes setting up a strong data system using IBM’s open-source tools, tweaked for India’s languages (Indic languages). They’ll add a solid governance setup to ensure responsible AI growth. Plus, they’ll set new standards for Indian languages and explore cutting-edge designs for generative AI.
Sandip Patel, IBM’s Managing Director for India and South Asia, added: “At IBM, we love building open and trustworthy AI that tackles everyday challenges. Partnering with BharatGen will help create sovereign AI that celebrates India’s diversity and makes a real difference in various sectors.”
BharatGen’s vision for Large Language Models (LLMs) and foundation models fits both national goals and business needs. A major highlight? Including lesser-known Indian languages and dialects—not just the top 12-22 ones—to bring more people into the digital fold and promote fairness.
This IBM BharatGen partnership could be a game-changer for AI adoption in India, making tech work better for all.
