Hochul ripped over cringe Lunar New Year video she recorded at request of alleged Chinese agent

Gov. Kathy Hochul is in hot water after a shaky Lunar New Year video she filmed back in 2021 is resurfacing. The clip was taken at the behest of an alleged Chinese agent and shows her wishing viewers “xin nian kuai le” (Happy New Year). Rep. Elise Stefanik has blasted the Democrat on‑air, calling her “compromised” and insisting the footage proves a deep‑state connection.

Stefanik posted the clip on X, labeling it as “Footage HERE of the video Kathy Hochul so ‘obediently’ filmed for the Chinese Communist Party after her Chinese Communist spy coaxed her into it.” She added that the same spy—who is on trial for “doing favors on behalf of Chinese officials in exchange for millions of dollars”—had pushed the governor into making the video.

The two‑minute message, currently on the Chinese Consulate’s YouTube page, was seized in evidence when Hochul’s former aide, Linda Sun, went before a Brooklyn federal court on Thursday on charges that she sold influence to China. Prosecutors claimed that Sun bragged the governor “was much more obedient” than the previous Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a claim Sun allegedly sent in a Jan. 25, 2021 message to the consulate’s chief Lihua Li. The same message suggested Hochul would be easier to coerce.

According to Sun, she was asked to supply talking points so the governor could “include them in her remarks,” a request that is now on the show‑down. In the finished video, Hochul praised Huang Ping—who then headed the consulate office—calling it a “privilege” to work with him on matters affecting Chinese New Yorkers.

Sun also faces a separate indictment for illegally profiting from the state’s bulk mask purchases during the COVID‑19 pandemic. She was ousted from the New York state payroll in 2023 when the spy allegations first surfaced.

Meanwhile, lawmakers in Albany seized the case to argue that the country has “infiltrated, impacted and influenced our elections and state government operations.” Assemblyman Matt Slater (R‑Putnam) said the situation demands a “bipartisan legislative commission” to “follow the facts wherever they led.” Senate Rep. Jake Ashby (R‑Washington) echoed that sentiment, stressing the matter’s national‑security implications and the need for decisive action.
