New Delhi – On December 4 Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stressed that India is forging a cleaner, more sustainable maritime future. Under the energetic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has adopted an ambitious green‑growth plan. He praised the chief minister’s steadfast support for environmental stewardship, energy transition and forward‑looking infrastructure when the nation’s first all‑electric green tug was unveiled.
The launch signals India’s strong commitment to clean‑energy integration in shipping. Sonowal noted that the vessel fits closely with Modi’s vision of sustainable development, tech‑driven progress and global leadership in green maritime capabilities. “This tug, destined for the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, marks a milestone in India’s shift toward energy‑efficient operations,” he said.
Developed under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ Green Tug Transition Programme, the tug showcases a flagship initiative to accelerate maritime decarbonisation. “The steel‑cutting ceremony reflects his pledge to build a greener, stronger, self‑reliant maritime ecosystem,” the minister added.
Sonowal highlighted that the Prime Minister’s “Viksit Bharat” agenda places maritime advancement at the core of India’s economic transformation. “Prime Minister Modi has shown how innovation can drive national progress. The all‑electric green tug is a shining example of turning that vision into tangible, world‑class assets that will serve our ports, protect the environment and elevate our global standing,” he remarked.
According to the ministry, the new tug will deliver a 60‑tonne bollard‑pull capacity while running silently, emitting no carbon, and optimizing energy efficiency. Its electric propulsion, advanced navigation and low‑maintenance design are expected to slash operating costs and carbon intensity, setting a benchmark for fleet modernisation across India’s major ports. —LatestNewsX
