New Delhi, Oct 7 – India is refocusing its energy strategy to become better at finding and using every type of energy it needs. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the country aims to be more self‑reliant in oil, gas and other power sources.
At a gathering in Delhi, Puri highlighted how oil and natural gas have powered India’s factories and homes, giving 1.42 billion people modern energy services. “Looking ahead to the 2047 deadline for energy independence, the sector is a key part of PM Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat vision,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
India is now the world’s third‑largest energy consumer. The minister also pointed out that the country ranks third in oil and LPG use, fourth in LNG imports and refining, and is the fourth‑largest auto market worldwide.
During the event, BP’s chief economist, Spencer Dale, explained that India’s energy demand will rise sharply over the next decade. “We’ll have to grow our production across all energy types,” Puri said, summarizing Dale’s talk.
He praised PM Modi’s Samudra Manthan deep‑water mission, a bold move to tap frontier resources. The past decade has also seen major reforms: shifting from NELP to HELP, moving from production‑sharing to revenue‑sharing deals, launching OALP rounds, opening almost all offshore “No‑Go” zones, and creating the digital NDR system.
Puri urged that a smooth energy transition requires a “nuanced understanding” and shouldn’t simply abandon fossil fuels. He warned that the choices India makes will shape both its future and the global energy landscape.
The minister’s remarks came as India signals a strong push toward energy self‑reliance and sustainable growth.
