New Delhi – Nov. 7 – India and the European Union (EU) continued their week‑long talks on a comprehensive free‑trade agreement (FTA). EU negotiators flew to New Delhi on November 3 and stayed through November 7 to push the India‑EU trade negotiations forward.
The talks covered every major chapter of the FTA, from goods and services to investment, rules of origin and technical trade barriers. The EU team also discussed sustainability issues and ways to make trade more resilient and inclusive.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal met in detail with Sabine Weyand, the European Commission’s Director General for Trade. Their two‑day stocktake sessions on November 5 and 6 reviewed the progress in each negotiating track and highlighted the remaining points of difference. Both sides said they would speed up efforts to close those gaps and keep the FTA momentum.
India re‑emphasised its commitment to a trade deal that promotes growth for all and delivers fair and balanced benefits. Secretary Agrawal also urged clarity and predictability around new EU rules, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the upcoming steel regulation. He said India wants rules that are transparent and easier for businesses to follow.
Both delegations celebrated the substantive gains made on several fronts. They agreed that technical‑level engagement in the coming weeks will be crucial to bridge the remaining differences and reach a final agreement as soon as possible.
The talks underline both sides’ strong desire to deepen the India‑EU partnership and to finish an ambitious FTA that will support sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economic growth.
