In New Delhi on Friday, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted how India’s reach in the global energy arena has grown considerably over the last ten years, expanding from 27 to 40 partner nations—a change he links to sharper energy diplomacy and a more resilient sourcing strategy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stewardship.

He added that the country has broadened its international ties, reshuffled its supplier mix, and cemented dependable alliances to secure a sturdier energy network.

“Bharat’s global energy footprint is expanding with purpose. From 27 partner countries a decade ago to 40 today, India has built a stronger and more secure energy network under PM Narendra Modi,” Puri noted in a on X.

Puri said this outreach aligns with India’s ambition to become a leading global refining and energy hub—a vision that has been reinforced by rapid capacity growth and policy changes since 2014.

“A broader sourcing basket, growing refining strength and trusted global partnerships are powering a more resilient future for Bharat,” he added.

Earlier this year, Puri pointed out that India’s refining capacity now stands at roughly 258 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and is set to climb to about 310 MMTPA by 2030, with a longer‑term target of 400–450 MMTPA. Such expansion would place India among the world’s top refining centers, especially as nearly a fifth of global refining capacity could be curtailed by 2035.

Despite muted worldwide growth in energy markets, India is expected to account for roughly 30–33 percent of the next decade’s additional global energy consumption.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Energy Technology Meet in Hyderabad last October, Puri underscored that Indian refineries are not only on par with the world’s best but also export‑ready, with petroleum product exports already surpassing $45 billion in FY 2024‑25 and serving over 50 countries.
