India marks entry into global arms market with Brahmos export to Philippines

India’s first big sale of its BrahMos cruise missile to the Philippines marks the country’s debut as a global defence exporter. The deal shows India’s growing influence in the Indo‑Pacific and its support for ASEAN partners against China’s growing assertiveness in the South China Sea.

The Philippines ordered three shore‑based anti‑ship missile batteries in January 2022. The contract, worth about $375 million, gives India the chance to supply the missiles, launchers, radar, and all the support equipment needed for the system. India will also train Philippine troops to operate the BrahMos.

Delivery began in April 2024. The first shipment, flown aboard an Indian Air Force IL‑76, included mobile launch units, missiles, radar and command‑and‑control gear. A second battery arrived a year later, and a third will follow in 2025.

With a range of 290 km (180 miles), the BrahMos is ideal for the Philippines to challenge China’s navy and coast guard in the region. The missile combines a solid‑fuel booster and a liquid‑fuel ramjet engine, allowing it to cruise from land, ship, submarine or aircraft.

The move strengthens India’s ties with ASEAN nations and supports a multipolar security architecture that counters China’s influence in the Indo‑Pacific.
