India scored a big win in global aviation circles, getting re-elected to a key part of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Council. This UN agency focuses on keeping international flights safe and smooth. The spot in Part II goes to countries that provide the most facilities for international air navigation, according to an official update.
India pulled in even more votes this time than in the 2022 elections. That boost shows how member countries trust New Delhi’s strong leadership and dedication to worldwide civil aviation standards.
The election happened on September 27 at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal. To rally support ahead of the vote, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation threw a reception on September 2 in New Delhi for ambassadors and high commissioners. Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu used the event to ask for backing in India’s bid for the 2025-2028 term.
The Ministry of External Affairs jumped in too, with ongoing talks that highlighted India’s full commitment to ICAO’s goals. India’s rep at ICAO headquarters worked hard to build support. Naidu also headed to Montreal for one-on-one meetings with other nations and chats with big names in the global aviation industry. As one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, India draws huge interest from international players in things like aircraft parts manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), and training programs.
India helped launch ICAO back in 1944 and has stayed on the Council non-stop for 81 years. The country keeps pushing forward on ICAO’s big aims: safer skies, stronger security, greener flights, better harmony across borders, and more women in aviation. India dives deep into creating policies, rules, and standards that shape global air travel.
The ICAO Assembly meets every three years as the top decision-making group for all 193 countries signed onto the Chicago Convention. During these sessions, members pick the 36-country ICAO Council, which runs things for the next three years.
Looking ahead to 2025-2028, India pledges to ramp up aviation safety, security, and eco-friendly practices. It also wants fairer access to air routes, fresh tech and ideas in flying, and backing for ICAO’s “No Country Left Behind” push to help every nation join the aviation boom.
