In Mumbai on Oct. 8, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met the UK’s business chief, Peter Kyle, to push forward the India‑UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The two leaders agreed to reshuffle the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) so it can steer the new trade deal into action and help lift bilateral trade to double the current level by 2030.
Kyle is in India as part of a large UK trade delegation that follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s two‑day visit. The meeting underscored the expectant pace of the India‑UK partnership. “It was a pleasure to meet Kyle,” Goyal posted on X, adding, “We share a commitment to advancing our economic partnership.” He said the government remains focused on turning the dream of a deep trade relationship into real results, creating jobs and strengthening ties.
The ministers also co‑chaired a key session on advanced manufacturing—a main pillar in the India‑UK relationship. Goyal highlighted the rise of AI, aerospace, automotive and semiconductor collaboration, saying, “We are putting the India‑UK FTA into action. Two innovative economies, one shared future.” The large UK business delegation accompanying the visit highlighted the bright future of trade.
Goyal welcomed a $1 billion investment from Eli Lilly to expand its manufacturing in India. The drugmaker’s move reaffirms India’s status as a global hub for innovation, R&D, and healthcare solutions. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “India has made remarkable progress in easing the business environment and building trust in its quality ecosystem,” Goyal told reporters.
The conversation illustrates that the India‑UK trade deal is moving forward, with ministers committed to fast‑tracking implementation, boosting trade, and creating new investment opportunities.
