India and the United States are ramping up talks to wrap up a trade agreement that benefits both countries soon. The Indian government announced this Friday after a key visit by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to the US.
Goyal led a delegation to Washington from September 22 to 24. He met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor to discuss bilateral trade issues.
The team also chatted with major US businesses and investors about boosting trade and investment ties between India and the US. “The meetings sparked positive vibes,” the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement. Business leaders showed strong faith in India’s growth story and want to ramp up their operations there.
Talks with the US government under President Donald Trump covered various parts of the potential deal. Both sides shared ideas on the agreement’s shape and agreed to keep the momentum going for a quick, win-win outcome.
In New York, Goyal joined a high-level event on energy security. He pushed for stronger India-US energy trade, including work on nuclear power as a clean and affordable option. He highlighted opportunities for startups in renewables and called for worldwide teamwork to build a secure, sustainable energy future.
Goyal praised India’s national grid for its reliability and non-stop power supply. He also spotlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “One Sun, One World, One Grid,” India’s top role in solar energy through the International Solar Alliance, and the country’s big wins in renewable energy—all aimed at inclusive, green growth.
Earlier in New York, Goyal sat down with Greer to tackle the first batch of trade agreement negotiations. They focused on tough issues but stayed optimistic about an interim deal in the works.
