In Rohtak, Haryana, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah highlighted India’s push toward becoming a developed nation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Speaking at the Khadi Mahotsav on the Maharshi Dayanand University campus, Shah said India aims for global leadership by 2047, the centenary of its independence. He stressed that khadi and village industries will play a key role, empowering millions of weavers.
Shah interacted with artisans at the event and teamed up with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to hand out modern machines, toolkits, and margin money totaling Rs 301 crore under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). This support pushes artisans toward self-reliance through swadeshi products. Shah also virtually launched PMEGP units, a central wool processing plant, and new khadi and village industries buildings, including KVIC’s office and warehouse in Panchkula.
He pointed out that past governments ignored khadi after independence, leaving village industries behind. But when Modi served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, he committed to reviving khadi and strengthening the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Thanks to Modi’s focus and ties to weavers, the khadi business has skyrocketed from Rs 33,000 crore to Rs 1.70 lakh crore in just 11 years. Shah noted the gains go straight to weavers, not big capitalists or private firms. KVIC now boasts top-notch packaging and marketing to boost reach.
At the festival, Shah happily distributed 12 types of advanced tools, like automatic charkhas and leather machines, plus financial aid for weavers. He explained that India’s freedom vision of ‘swaraj’ needs ‘swadeshi’ and ‘swabhasha’ to feel complete. Prime Minister Modi has rallied 140 crore Indians to embrace local products, fueling Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the swadeshi movement for everyone’s benefit.
Shah shared that Modi recently slashed GST on over 395 items, calling it a Diwali surprise for the nation. He urged Indians to see khadi as both a tool for national strength and modern fashion. “Khadi for the nation, khadi for fashion—everyone should join in,” he said, calling on festival-goers to buy khadi, promote indigenous goods, and build a self-reliant India.
Chief Minister Saini praised Shah’s words, saying khadi is India’s proud heritage. “Khadi products are going from local markets to global stages,” Saini added. He credited Modi’s leadership for khadi’s massive growth and international buzz, calling the Khadi Mahotsav a true celebration of self-reliant India.
