India is stepping up its push for a responsible and inclusive AI ecosystem under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). As part of its IndiaAI Mission, the ministry hosted a Regional Pre‑Summit in Gandhinagar on Thursday, held at Mahatma Mandir in partnership with the Gujarat government and IIT Gandhinagar.
The gathering is an essential precursor to the India–AI Impact Summit 2026, which will take place in New Delhi from February 15‑20 next year. It brings together senior officials, tech leaders, researchers and industry experts to talk about how AI can accelerate India’s economic, digital and social progress.
Sessions will focus on using AI to improve governance, public services and development in both cities and rural areas. The conference opened with an inauguration attended by top dignitaries from Gujarat and the central government, including Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Rajnikant Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Rameshbhai Sanghavi, State Science & Technology Minister Arjunbhai Modhwadia, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Das, Additional Secretary MeitY and NIC Director‑General Abhishek Singh, and Gujarat’s Department of Science & Technology Secretary Ponugumatla Bharathi.
Centered on the theme AI for Good Governance: Empowering India’s Digital Future, the event featured keynote talks by national and international experts from organizations such as MeitY, Bhashini, Google Cloud, Microsoft, IBM Research, NVIDIA, Oracle and AWS. Topics ranged from AI in governance and agriculture to smart rural development, healthcare, digital inclusion, fintech, and generative AI.
A key highlight was the discussion on multilingual AI, with platforms like Bhashini demonstrating how language barriers can be bridged across the country. Participants also had the chance to explore an Experience Zone curated by IndiaAI and the Department of Science & Technology, showcasing AI‑powered solutions in governance, health, agriculture and industry.
By uniting policymakers, technologists and academics on one stage, the Gandhinagar Pre‑Summit aims to build scalable, trustworthy AI frameworks aligned with the public interest.
