New Delhi – India’s 18 biosphere reserves cover more than 91,000 sq km and prove that wildlife, culture and people can thrive together. According to a recent report, the country’s protected areas serve as “living laboratories” where new conservation methods are tried in real time.

The report highlights that 13 of the reserves join UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, giving them worldwide recognition for their ecological and cultural value.

India has doubled its biodiversity budget to ₹10 crore for 2025‑26, showing that the government is investing in on‑the‑ground projects. The savings help support key national initiatives such as Project Tiger, Project Elephant and the Green India Mission, creating a policy ecosystem that links species protection with local livelihoods.

These combined efforts have already boosted forest cover and quality. India now ranks ninth globally for total forest area and third for the fastest annual forest growth. The gains matter more than numbers: they signal healthier ecosystems and better chances for communities that rely on forests for food, medicine and income.

Biosphere reserves also enhance ecological health and climate resilience, especially in vulnerable habitats. The reserves foster innovative, forest‑based jobs that offer alternatives to slash‑and‑burn or mining.

India’s commitment to national and international environmental agreements, its legal safeguards and fresh financial models set a benchmark for other nations. The report warns that the real challenge will be keeping the reserves inclusive, flexible and genuinely participatory amid climate change and growing development demands.

To guarantee future success, the report urges a blend of ecological science, social care and economic planning—ensuring forests, wildlife and communities continue to flourish side by side.
