Indian leaders say that science and traditional wisdom should work together, not fight each other. In Abu Dhabi, Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh spoke for India at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress. He explained how blending modern science with ancient practices can help tackle the global climate crisis.
During the High‑Level Roundtable Dialogue, Singh highlighted India’s long‑standing belief that living in harmony with nature is part of our culture. “India has long practiced sustainability,” he said, “and modern science is just naming the ideas we already live by.” He urged that climate and conservation actions worldwide must combine scientific data with proven traditional methods.
India is actively documenting and validating indigenous knowledge for formal climate adaptation plans. Singh gave vivid examples, such as the Toda people in the Nilgiris who predict monsoons by watching ants build nests, or the Jarawa tribe in the Andaman Islands who gauge cyclone danger from fish swimming into shallow waters. These age‑old techniques show that local wisdom can complement scientific models.
The minister also drew attention to Rajasthan’s historic step wells and the “Silver Drops of Rajasthan” water‑conservation program, which preserve water while respecting local ecology. These projects illustrate how traditional techniques can sustain communities as climate change worsens.
“Mission LiFE,” launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is another example. It builds on ancestral teachings and modern science to create a “people‑led global movement.” The campaign encourages everyday environmental habits rooted in India’s cultural heritage, aiming to turn climate concerns into real action.
“Our environmental policies must be evidence‑based, fair, and culturally grounded,” Singh said. He wrapped up by stressing that merging science with tradition will help transform abstract ideas into practical solutions for conservation and climate resilience.
