Indian Officials Visit Taiwan to Boost Semiconductor Ties at SEMICON 2025
Two top Indian officials have landed in Taipei to join the buzzing SEMICON Taiwan 2025 event and chat with local industry bigwigs. Their goal? Strengthen India-Taiwan collaboration in the global semiconductor world, according to a Focus Taiwan report.
S. Krishnan, secretary at India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, shared his thoughts at a press meet in Taipei. "Taiwan has nailed its spot in the semiconductor value chain. They’ve clearly done something right over the years," he said, praising how the island nation has built its success.
Krishnan pointed out that Taiwanese giants like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Delta have thrived in India, especially in the electronics sector, over the past few decades. He highlighted a major win in 2024: India’s Tata Electronics teamed up with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation to set up the country’s first 12-inch wafer fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat.
This partnership shows why India is a hotspot for high-tech industries, Krishnan explained. "India offers a massive market, skilled human resources, and a young, talented population," he added, making it prime ground for semiconductor growth.
Joining Krishnan is Amitesh Sinha, CEO of the India Semiconductor Mission. This government body drives key strategies to build India’s semiconductor ecosystem. The duo is eyeing fresh opportunities in advanced semiconductor design, manufacturing, capital equipment, and stronger supply chains.
The India Taipei Association, which handles India’s interests in Taiwan without formal diplomatic links, says the visit focuses on creating new synergies to make both nations’ semiconductor sectors more resilient.
Krishnan was impressed by Taiwan’s setup. "I’ve learned they have niche technologies offering all sorts of services in semiconductors," he noted. He stressed the need for India to support the full ecosystem, helping linked companies flourish.
He also loved how Taiwan’s universities sync perfectly with the semiconductor industry. "We in India must push our top academic institutions to align closely with semiconductor developments," Krishnan urged.
SEMICON Taiwan is the go-to annual expo and conference for semiconductor tech, device fabrication, microelectronics manufacturing, packaging, and testing. This year’s event, running from Wednesday to Friday, packs in over 1,200 companies, more than 4,100 booths, and expects around 100,000 pros from the industry, per organizers.
With India ramping up its semiconductor push, this Taiwan visit could spark even more exciting partnerships in the coming years.
