Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday that Indian Railways has set up a network of “war rooms” to keep passenger traffic flowing smoothly during the busy festive season.
The system creates hot‑spots of decision‑making at every level – from divisional stations to the board and a central hub in New Delhi – so that staff can react instantaneously to crowd spikes.
So far the railways have already run 10,700 trains through the IRCTC platform and kept about 3,000 more on standby to answer any sudden surge in passenger demand.
Vaishnaw pointed to real‑time fixes that have eased congestion in recent weeks. On October 18, a heavy crowd at Udhna station in Surat was relieved when extra trains were shifted from nearby lines. A similar bottleneck in Ambala was cleared by adding more services around Jalandhar.
The minister also announced that the number of destinations in Bihar has grown to 18 villages this year, up from just seven last year, to help travelers during the upcoming Hindu festivals.
At the heart of the operation is a central command war room at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. The facility monitors congestion, passenger complaints, and on‑ground incidents, allowing swift coordination across the network. According to Vaishnaw, more than 80 war rooms are now active, making the railway system better able to intervene when needed.
In an official statement, Indian Railways said it plans to run 1,500 special trains over the next five days – roughly 300 each day – to serve the surge in passengers for the Chhath festival. These specials will run in addition to the regular timetable.
During the Diwali season, the railways expanded its special services even further. In the 21 days leading up to the holiday, they ran 4,493 special trips—about 213 a day—to help families travel home safely for the celebrations.
“Indian Railways is going the extra mile to make sure every traveler reaches his destination safely and comfortably,” the statement added.
