TN’s Arcot set for for major traffic relief as new elevated corridor, underpass to open

Chennai, Nov 15 – The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is about to open a new elevated corridor and an underpass on the Chennai‑Bengaluru Highway (NH‑48) near Arcot in Tamil Nadu. The project, built for Rs 22 crore, aims to cut traffic jams and boost safety at a busy junction in Ranipet district.
The elevated road will carry vehicles from Chennai—government buses, school vans and personal cars—over a 15‑metre‑wide, two‑lane structure. Vehicles heading to Bengaluru will stay on the existing road. Below, a 4.5‑metre‑high, 20‑metre‑wide underpass will let two‑wheelers, cars and buses complete safe U‑turns and reach key localities.
Residents say the new crossing will save them the 1.5‑km detour they previously had to make to cross the highway. “We’ll reach markets, schools, banks and hospitals faster,” said a local commuter.
The underpass will also reduce the number of U‑turn points along the route, lowering the chance of side‑impact crashes. The area is home to schools, hospitals, government offices and the Arcot bus terminus, making controlled crossings essential for public safety.
NHAI teams are finishing the project. They’ve laid the final black‑topping layer on the elevated corridor and are installing LED street lights, reflectors, warning signs and blinkers to improve visibility. Engineers note that the underpass is strategically placed, about 1.5 km from other crossings, in line with national safety standards.
With this addition, the 148‑km stretch of NH‑48 between Krishnagiri and Walajapet—already featuring 19 underpasses—gets another key safety feature. The new corridor and underpass promise smoother, safer travel for thousands of commuters in Arcot and beyond.
