New Delhi, Oct 10 – India is building its own large‑language AI system, the government said Friday. Officials highlighted that the country now has 38,000 GPUs for just ₹65 an hour and 12 companies already working on foundation models. The goal: launch an Indian LLM by end‑2024 and cut reliance on foreign AI platforms.
Abhishek Singh, the Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and Chief Executive of IndiaAI, outlined the IndiaAI Mission. The mission, approved last year, tackles key gaps: affordable computing power, a national data hub, support for building foundational models, AI skill development, and safety safeguards.
MeitY kicked off a series of pre‑summit events for the upcoming India‑AI Impact Summit 2026, which will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on February 19–20. The events gathered leaders from government, industry, academia, and global bodies to discuss how AI can drive inclusive, sustainable growth across India’s digital and telecom landscape.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized the government’s collaborative, cost‑effective approach. “We learn from global peers to create projects that truly make a difference,” he said. “By partnering with the private sector and keeping services open to the public, we level the playing field and make AI accessible to all, a model that has attracted interest from international agencies, especially in the Global South.”
“The summit’s theme – ‘From Action to Impact’ – reflects India’s vision of using AI for societal benefit, economic resilience, and inclusive growth,” added Krishnan.
Participants reviewed the expanding AI ecosystem, progress under the IndiaAI Mission, and ways to broaden access to AI tools. The 2026 summit will bring global leaders together to promote responsible AI design, guided by the principles of “People, Planet, Progress.”
India’s push for a domestically built large‑language model signals an ambitious push to strengthen AI independence, drive economic growth, and build a future‑ready workforce.
