In a bid to boost India‑Angola ties, India plans to ship its high‑speed “Vande Bharat” train to the African nation, a move that marks a fresh chapter in the country’s growing engagement with the Global South.
During a press briefing, Ranjeet Mehta, CEO of PHDCCI and Secretary‑General, said the proposal follows President Droupadi Murmu’s invitation to export the world‑first indigenously built train. “It is a milestone for ‘Make in India’ and a sign of India’s new tech‑savvy era,” he said.
The initiative comes as India and Angola deepen cooperation in energy and resources. Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço and President Murmu met to discuss expanding links in oil, gas, deep‑sea exploration, and infrastructure. Sign‑off agreements covered fisheries, aquaculture, marine resources, and consular matters.
“Angola’s mineral and energy reserves and our fast‑growing economy make this partnership a win for both,” Mehta noted. He highlighted the youth in both countries as a catalyst for joint ventures in skills training, agriculture, and digital technology.
The train deal is seen as a tangible step toward India’s 2047 vision of a modern, self‑reliant nation. It also underscores India’s role as a leading partner for African development, especially as President Murmu and President Lourenço celebrate Angola’s 50th year of independence and 40 years of diplomatic ties with India.
The collaboration sits within the broader India‑Africa Forum Summit agenda, reaffirming India’s pledge to support Angola’s development on both bilateral and multilateral fronts.
