India’s smartphone market is buzzing with steady growth, shipping a solid 60 million units in the first half of 2025—a 2% jump from last year, according to a fresh report from the International Data Corporation (IDC). This uptick shows how Indians are still hooked on upgrading their devices, even in a competitive landscape.
Apple stole the spotlight as the fastest-growing brand, boosting its shipments by an impressive 35%. No wonder—its premium iPhones are flying off the shelves. The report highlights that high-end smartphones priced over Rs 50,000 fueled much of this growth, while the popular mid-range segment (Rs 10,000–20,000) held the top spot for total volume, making it a go-to for budget-conscious buyers.
Region-wise, northern states grabbed a whopping 33% market share, but the southern region stole the show with the quickest growth. Even smaller Tier-4 cities like Mysore and Shimla saw double-digit surges, proving that smartphone demand is spreading far beyond big metros.
Switching gears, another report from CyberMedia Research (CMR) predicts an exciting festive season ahead for India’s premium smartphone market. Expect an 18% rise in sales and a 24% increase in value as shoppers splurge during Diwali and beyond. Super-premium phones (Rs 50,000–1,00,000) could grow 15%, but the uber-premium ones above Rs 1,00,000 might explode by 167%—that’s a game-changer for luxury gadget lovers.
Prabhu Ram, VP of CMR’s Industry Research Group, points out that Gen Z and millennials are leading the charge. These aspirational buyers want powerful smartphones that handle their digital lives, from gaming to AI features. “Thanks to better accessibility and affordability options, more people are eyeing the latest premium devices,” he adds.
In July, Samsung topped the premium smartphone market with 28% share, followed by Apple at 23% and OPPO at 11%. Apple’s iPhone 17 series, plus ongoing demand for older models, positions it perfectly for the festive rush.
Buyers today care a lot about what’s under the hood—think top-notch chipsets for smooth multitasking, high-end gaming, pro-level cameras, and AI smarts. As competition heats up, this means more choices and better deals for Indian consumers this season. With modest overall growth, the premium segment’s boom could make 2025 a standout year for smartphone enthusiasts.
