IndiGo shares fall over 3 pc as massive flight cancellations trigger regulator probe

New Delhi – IndiGo’s parent, InterGlobe Aviation, saw its shares slide more than 3 % on Thursday as the airline wrestled with widespread flight cancellations across India. The stock hit ₹5,405 that morning, its lowest point in over five months, and continued a two‑session losing streak. On Wednesday, the carrier grounded about 200 flights, marking one of its worst operational hiccups in recent times.

The chaos stemmed mainly from a severe crew shortage, especially pilots, after last month’s revised Flight Duty Time Limitations took effect. The new rules demand airlines give crews more rest and reasonable work schedules, a shift IndiGo has struggled to implement quickly.

The ripple effect reached Thursday as well, with nearly 73 flights cancelled at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, further aggravating passenger frustration. In response, IndiGo apologized, admitting major network disruptions over the past two days. The airline cited a mix of unexpected issues – minor technical glitches, winter timetable tweaks, bad weather, heavy air traffic and the rollout of new crew rostering rules – that conspired to create an unpredicted crisis.

To bring operations back on track, IndiGo said it has made targeted schedule changes that will stay in place for the next 48 hours, hoping these steps will restore regularity and improve on‑time performance. At the same time, the aviation regulator DGCA has opened an inquiry into the upheavals, demanding a detailed report from IndiGo that explains the cause of the cancellations and outlines its plan to cut delays and lessen passenger inconvenience.

On Tuesday, IndiGo shares had already dipped around 2 % to close at ₹5,595.50. The stock has fallen nearly 6 % in the last five days, yet it still enjoys a gain of over 2 % year‑to‑date.
