Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani threw his weight behind speeding up the India-EU Free Trade Agreement during a visit to New York. He shared this support after chatting with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday.
In a post on X, Tajani wrote, “I confirmed Italy’s support for a rapid finalization of the Free Trade Agreement.” He highlighted the strong strategic partnership between Italy and India, both politically and economically. Tajani plans to boost these ties even more with a trip to India in the coming months.
India tops Italy’s export plan, known as #PianoExport. To back this up, Tajani announced a 500 million euro commitment to help Italian companies expand there.
Jaishankar echoed the positive vibes on X, noting their talks covered hot topics like the Mediterranean, Middle East, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific. They also reviewed progress in India-Italy bilateral ties.
Jaishankar’s busy day didn’t stop there. He met Britain’s new Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, who stepped into the role this month. Their discussion focused on following up from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s July visit to the UK. That’s when leaders unveiled the India-UK Vision 2035—a 10-year roadmap for deeper cooperation.
This vision pairs with ongoing work on a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between India and the UK. It targets key areas like defence partnerships, job creation, cutting-edge technologies, and education exchanges.
Jaishankar rounded out his meetings with other global leaders, including Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Guatemala’s Carlos Ramiro Martínez, Egypt’s Badr Abdelatty, Malaysia’s Mohamad Haji Hasan, Costa Rica’s Arnoldo André, and Panama’s Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez. These talks underscore India’s growing role in international diplomacy and trade relations.
