Japanese omakase restaurant to open near Grand Central

SORA, a new Japanese dining venture, has signed a 14,430‑square‑foot lease at Empire State Realty Trust’s One Grand Central Place, a Midtown Manhattan office tower on East 42nd Street. The space will take over the former First Republic Bank location on the tower’s side that faces Park and Madison Avenues.

The restaurant will open in a high‑profile spot opposite One Vanderbilt, where Daniel Boulud’s Le Pavillon now sits. SORA is backed by Japan’s publicly traded Round 1 Corporation and will feature six private rooms. Five of the rooms will be curated by a highly regarded Japanese chef, while the sixth promises a “direct‑from‑Tokyo” cocktail experience.

“By bringing an innovative omakase concept to the area, SORA adds another top food destination to the Grand Central District,” said Fred Posniak, who represented ESRT. CBRE agents Robert Bonicoro and Betsy DaSilva handled the leasing.

One Grand Central Place, also known as 60 E. 42nd Street, houses 1.24 million square feet of office space. More than 93% of the building is already leased to companies such as iCapital Network, GLG, and Sol de Janeiro. The new restaurant will add a unique culinary presence to a busy business hub that already hosts a mix of finance and creative tenants.
