Traders in the coal‑capital of Jharkhand shut down their entire market on Monday after a violent robbery. The incident underlines a worrying rise in crime in Dhanbad, a city that sees a daily footfall worth about 7‑8 crore rupees at its main Market Committee complex.
A shopkeeper, Shyam Bhimsariya, was attacked inside the government‑run market near the Barwadda police post late Sunday night. Three bikers rushed him while he was closing his shop, fired several shots, and snatched a bag of 4 lakh rupees before speeding away. The bullet grazed his shoulder, sparking panic among customers and fellow traders.
By Monday morning, hundreds of traders gathered at the market’s main gate and began chanting slogans. They called on the administration to act fast and demand that the attackers be arrested within 48 hours.
“It is unacceptable to trade in an environment where safety is compromised,” one trader told reporters. “If the authorities ignore this, we’ll push our protest into other markets across the district.”
State politicians weighed in. BJP MP Dhullu Mahto warned that “criminals are roaming fearlessly” in Dhanbad and urged the police to step up. Jharia Congress MLA Ragini Singh said the state government was “completely silent” on law‑and‑order issues, adding that people live in fear while criminals dictate terms.
Out‑going Mayor Chandrashekhar Agarwal pushed for immediate security upgrades, suggesting that CCTV cameras be installed and a permanent police post set up in the market area. Chetan Goenka, president of the Dhanbad District Chamber of Commerce, slammed the authorities for past failures: “A market with a daily turnover of 7‑8 crore rupees has no CCTV or police patrol. Traders cannot work under threat.”
The Dhanbad market remains a key commercial hub in Jharkhand’s coal lands. Local businesses, shoppers, and lawmakers are now awake to the urgent need for tighter security and reliable policing in the city’s bustling trade center.
