Kerala’s coastal economy just got a massive push! At the two-day Kerala-European Union (EU) Blue Economy Conclave called “Blue Tides,” which wrapped up in Kovalam on Friday, investors pledged a whopping Rs 7,288 crore. This blue economy investment is set to transform the state’s fisheries and maritime sectors.
Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian shared the exciting news during the closing session. He revealed that 28 investors signed expressions of interest right there at the event. “This conclave smashed its goals and could inspire the whole country,” Cherian said. “It’s a game-changer for Kerala’s fisheries and related industries.”
The event, put together by the Kerala government, the Centre, and the EU, focused on sustainable growth for the state’s coastal areas. Cherian pointed out how Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan kicked things off by calling it a key step for innovation and building climate-resilient coastal communities.
One big win? The EU wants Kerala to set up a special platform for ongoing teamwork with European countries. EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin was thrilled, saying, “Team Europe sees tons of ways to partner with Kerala.” He linked it to the global Blue Economy Summit in France earlier this year, spotlighting chances in healthcare, IT, logistics, and green practices.
Chief Secretary Dr A. Jayathilak added that the discussions went way beyond money—they dove into cool stuff like advanced marine tech, linking into global supply chains, and fighting climate change.
These Rs 7,288 crore blue economy proposals will supercharge Kerala’s fisheries with better deep-sea fishing, seafood processing, and marine setups. Plus, side sectors like ports, shipbuilding, logistics, and cold chains stand to benefit from EU tech and eco-friendly methods. Expect more jobs and growth along the coast, with IT and healthcare ties opening new doors for a diverse economy.
