Looking forward to serving India with Starlink: Elon Musk

New Delhi – On Wednesday, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, tweeted that he is keen to bring Starlink’s low‑cost satellite internet to India. His reply came after Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who had earlier met with Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s Vice President and Senior Director of Starlink Business Operations, posted on X. The minister welcomed the meeting and highlighted the importance of satellite technology for advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s digital‑India vision, noting that it would help bridge connectivity gaps in the nation’s remotest corners and spur wider social and economic progress.

When Starlink’s Indian pricing glitch caused the company’s own site to display wrong figures, the team confirmed that the error had been swiftly corrected and clarified that the displayed amounts were not representative of the actual cost in India. The official Starlink India website, which has since launched, currently lists a monthly subscription fee of ₹8,600, while a new customer would need to purchase a hardware kit for ₹34,000.

In her recent X post, Dreyer said: “The Starlink India website is not live, service pricing for customers in India has not yet been announced, and we are not taking orders from customers in India.” She added that a configuration glitch had briefly exposed test data that misrepresented potential prices and that those figures do not indicate the true service cost. “The glitch was quickly fixed,” she noted.

Dreyer went on to say that Starlink is eager to connect Indian users with high‑speed broadband and that her team is actively working to obtain final government approvals so the service, along with its website, can go live. The offering promises plug‑and‑play installation, more than 99.9 % uptime, high weather resilience, and no data caps, all designed to reach consumers in areas where terrestrial broadband remains unreliable. —LatestNewsX
