The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) opened a new research hub in Manipal this week, backed by a 12.84‑crore rupee grant from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The ICMR‑MAHE Centre for Advanced Research (CAR) will sit at the Manipal Hospice and Respite Centre (MHRC) and bring cutting‑edge palliative‑care studies into India’s intensive‑care units (ICUs).
Dr Naveen Salins, a professor in palliative medicine at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Manipal, leads the centre as Principal Investigator. Dr Arun Ghoshal, an assistant professor, serves as Co‑Principal Investigator.
The ceremony drew ICMR leaders Dr Ashoo Grover, Scientist G, and Dr Roopa Shivashankar, Scientist E, as chief guests. MAHE’s Pro‑Chancellor Dr H S. Ballal presided over the event, while Dr Sharath K Rao, MAHE’s Pro‑Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, organized the launch. Other dignitaries included Dr Anil K. Bhat, Dean of KMC Manipal, and Dr Cherian Varghese, Director of the Prasanna School of Public Health.
The CAR aims to address a major gap in India’s health system: delivering compassionate, evidence‑based care to patients with advanced or terminal illnesses in ICUs. The centre will create and test a “Multifaceted Comprehensive Appropriate Care Package” (MCACP) that blends palliative‑care principles with critical‑care practice.
MAHE has already made waves with its BLUE MAPLE framework, a national standard for end‑of‑life care that launched at Kasturba Hospital. The new CAR will expand that work, linking ten clinical sites and seven technical partners across the country. By collaborating across medicine, nursing, bioethics, health economics, law, and public health, the centre pursues a “One Health‑One Humanity” research approach.
“Our partnership with ICMR signals national recognition of MAHE’s research culture,” said Dr Ballal. “We’re committed to science that heals and research that transforms.” Dr Rao outlined a roadmap that will guide MAHE’s future health‑research agenda.
The centre will generate data to shape health‑policy, improve system responsiveness, and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It positions MAHE as a national and global reference for ICU and palliative‑care research, and could set new benchmarks for interdisciplinary work in India.
MAHE, an Institution of Eminence, offers more than 400 programmes across health sciences, management, law, humanities, and technology. The university boasts a strong record in academics, state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, and research impact. Ranked fourth in India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), MAHE remains a top choice for students and employers alike.
