New Delhi – On October 8, 2025, Project Roshni, a free eye‑screening drive launched by Making The Difference Charitable Trust with support from the International Gemological Institute (IGI), opened its doors in Mumbai. The initiative, led by Deepak Vishwakarma and Vice‑President Dwiti Mehta, has already drawn a strong response from workers at the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB).

So far the team has examined more than 3,500 diamond‑workers and has registered over 4,000 others who are scheduled for check‑ups in the coming weeks. The project, whose name means “light” in Hindi, provides comprehensive eye tests and free spectacles to those who polish, sort and grade diamonds – jobs that demand precise visual accuracy.

Each visitor receives a full exam that covers near and far vision, colour vision, dry‑eye assessment, intra‑ocular pressure and both automatic and manual refraction tests. Twelve trained optometrists perform the examinations using high‑end tools such as auto‑refractometers, LED vision monitors and easy‑ton tonometers. On the same day, patients walk out with a printed eye‑health report and a pair of free glasses.

Bharat Diamond Bourse President Anoop Mehta praised the effort: “Seeing Project Roshni cover over 7,000 of our workers is encouraging. The knowledge we share will continue to benefit our team.” Vice‑Chairman Mehul Shah added, “Our artisans give diamonds their shine. This programme unites vision care with wellbeing, and we thank IGI and Making The Difference for leading it.”

IGI Chief Executive Ishwar Iyer highlighted the partnership’s broader value: “BDB’s support shows that eye health is integral to the craft of diamond-making. By caring for the eyes behind each gem, we ensure that skilled hands can continue to shape brilliance.”

Founder Deepak Vishwakarma said the response has been “phenomenal.” He stressed the urgent need for preventive eye care: “Over 4,000 workers still wait to be screened, which shows how critical this initiative is.” Vice‑President Dwiti Mehta echoed that sentiment: “Project Roshni started as a basic treatment programme and has grown into a preventative eye‑care campaign. Witnessing its impact on the workers’ lives is truly rewarding.”

The campaign aims to reach 7,000 diamond labourers by October 2025. A joint digital dashboard from IGI and Making The Difference tracks results in real time, encouraging BDB to incorporate regular health camps into its welfare programmes.
