India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Sergio Gor, the U.S. nominee for ambassador to India, in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The two discussed ways to strengthen the US-India relationship, and both expressed excitement about building on its successes.
The U.S. State Department shared the news on X, noting that Jaishankar and Gor “look forward to further promoting the success of the U.S.-India relationship.” This came right after Jaishankar’s bilateral talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where they stressed the need for ongoing engagement to advance key priorities between the two nations.
Gor still awaits Senate confirmation for his ambassador role, but once approved, he’ll also serve as President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia. A longtime Trump ally, Gor helped steer the president’s election campaign and led the White House’s presidential personnel office, where he vetted and selected top appointees.
During his recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Gor highlighted the growing importance of the US-India partnership. “The US-India partnership will define the 21st Century,” he said. He called India a key strategic partner whose path will influence the region and the world. Gor also pointed to the special bond between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as “something unique.
If confirmed, Gor will take over at the U.S. embassy in New Delhi’s upscale Chanakyapuri neighborhood. One of his biggest challenges? Fixing strained US-India trade ties. Tensions rose when Trump slapped a 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and added another 25% punitive tariff over India’s purchases of Russian oil.
Gor addressed this head-on at the hearing, arguing that boosting US-India trade would not only sharpen America’s edge in global markets but also curb China’s economic influence over other countries. As the partnership evolves, eyes will be on how Gor navigates these hurdles to deepen ties between the world’s largest democracies.
