Mumbai, Nov 4 – Mehli Mistry, who was recently removed from Tata Trusts after a clash inside the board, has formally announced that he will step down as a trustee. In a letter to Noel Tata, the current chairman of the Trusts, Mistry reminded Noel of his promise to uphold Ratan Tata’s vision for the organization.
He wrote that his commitment was to keep Tata Trusts out of “controversy” and protect its reputation. “Turning a blind eye to the wrong turns could damage the Trust’s name permanently,” he said. He urged the remaining trustees to follow Ratan Tata’s principles of ethical governance, quiet philanthropy, transparency and public interest. “No one is bigger than the institution they serve,” Mistry quoted Ratan Tata for his final line.
Earlier reports say Mistry filed a caveat with the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner, insisting his side be heard before the Trust’s decision is finalized. Indian law requires the Trust to get the Commission’s approval for any board changes within 90days.
The departure of Mistry underscores a deeper internal rift at Tata Trusts, a major philanthropic charity with a long‑standing reputation for integrity. The Trust’s future leaders will now face pressure to uphold the values of transparency, good governance and public interest as they navigate the organization’s next chapter.
