Merck Teams Up with Tata Electronics to Boost India’s Semiconductor Industry

In a big move to strengthen India’s semiconductor sector, German tech giant Merck and Tata Electronics have announced a new partnership. On September 2, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on developing advanced materials, manufacturing infrastructure, and supply chain solutions for India’s growing chip industry.

Under this partnership, Merck will supply its full range of products and services. This includes high-purity electronic materials, advanced gas and chemical delivery systems, and turnkey solutions for building semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs). Merck will also bring its AI-powered Material Intelligence solutions to support Tata Electronics’ upcoming fab in Dholera, Gujarat.

A key focus of the collaboration is sharing best practices on safety, quality, and manufacturing excellence. Merck will also provide access to platforms like Athinia, a data analytics platform that helps foster collaboration across the semiconductor industry. Together, they plan to develop local warehousing, raw material supply chains, and nurture skilled talent, all aimed at strengthening India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

Dr. Kai Beckmann, Merck’s Executive Board Member and CEO of Electronics, highlighted India’s growing importance in the global chip industry. “Merck is proud to support India’s semiconductor journey. Our goal is to build a reliable, innovative ecosystem that helps India achieve its semiconductor ambitions,” he said.

Tata Electronics CEO and Managing Director Randhir Thakur shared his excitement about the partnership. “We aim to become a leader in semiconductor manufacturing by offering end-to-end solutions for our global customers. Partnering with Merck brings world-class expertise in advanced materials and manufacturing safety. Together, we’ll accelerate our Dholera fab development and set new standards in quality and innovation,” he said.

This MoU aligns with India’s ambitious Semiconductor Mission, which aims to make the country a self-reliant hub for chip production. Tata Electronics is building India’s first semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of around Rs 91,000 crore ($11 billion). The facility will produce chips for cars, smartphones, AI, and other applications for global markets. Construction is moving quickly, and partnerships like this are key to creating a robust semiconductor ecosystem in India, covering everything from technologies to talent.

With Merck’s extensive experience in semiconductor materials and global standards, this collaboration promises to boost India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. It will also support the local industry’s growth, creating new opportunities and strengthening India’s position in the global chip supply chain.

This partnership marks an important step forward for India’s semiconductor goals, making the country more self-sufficient and globally competitive in chip production.
