Meta's Instagram to add PG-13 movie-style rating for teen accounts

Meta has announced a new feature for Instagram that will give teen‑age users a “PG‑13” rating on the content they see and share. The move, aimed at keeping younger audiences safer, works by adding a movie‑style label to posts that contain mature themes such as nudity, drug use or strong language.

### How the new system works

When a teen account posts or looks at a story, Instagram’s algorithms scan the image, text and hashtags for clues that the content might be “mature”. If it flags something as PG‑13, the platform adds a small banner that reads “PG‑13” alongside the post. Readers can tap the banner to read a brief warning that the content may not be suitable for younger viewers.

The feature is built on Instagram’s existing “Safe‑Mode” and “Restricted Mode” settings, but it expands the warning system so parents and guardians can see tags when they manage their child’s account. Moms and dads can also choose to review banned terminology before a teen posts it.

### Who will see the rating

The new PG‑13 labels are planned for accounts marked as “Teen” by users. In most parts of the world, Instagram automatically assigns a teen profile if the user claims to be under 18. The service is set to launch in the United States first, with a rollout scheduled for the rest of the world over the next few months.

### Why Meta launched the update

Meta says the PG‑13 rating will bring a consistent, clear warning system to Instagram that mirrors how movies and TV shows use ratings to protect audiences. “Parents trust us to help protect their kids on the platform,” a Meta spokesperson said. “Adding a clear, movie‑style rating helps them see all potentially sensitive content at a glance.”

The company also wants to make it easier for its entire user base to identify posts that might be unsuitable for younger viewers. By flagging “PG‑13” content prominently, Instagram hopes to reduce the amount of controversial posts that slip past its moderation routine.

### What to expect

– Teen users will automatically get a PG‑13 banner on any post that contains adult language, drug references, or implied sexual content.
– Parents can toggle a “Teen Safety Mode” that highlights all PG‑13 content for quick review.
– Content flagged as PG‑13 may be repositioned in the feed or routed to a separate “mature” tab for teen viewers.
– The system will also stop certain age‑restricted images from appearing in the home feed if the account is under 13.

### Final thoughts

Meta’s Instagram PG‑13 warning is one of many steps the company is taking to improve content safety on the platform. By giving teens and parents a simple, movie‑style sign about potentially mature material, Instagram aims to make the social network a safer place for young users while still letting them share the posts and stories that matter to them.
