Good News for Milk Lovers: Prices Drop by Rs 2 Per Litre Thanks to GST Changes
Hey there, if you’re a fan of fresh milk or creamy paneer, we’ve got some great news! Mother Dairy just announced a price cut on milk, making it cheaper by Rs 2 per litre. This exciting update comes right after the government’s big GST reforms that slashed taxes on everyday essentials.
Starting September 22 – just a week from now – you’ll see these lower prices kick in across Delhi and nearby areas. And it’s not just milk; a bunch of dairy favourites like cottage cheese (paneer), butter, cheese, and even ice creams will cost less too. All this is thanks to the revised GST rates on food products, which aim to make life easier for families.
Let’s break down what happened with GST. The government stepped in with relief for consumers by cutting taxes on key items. Earlier, many essentials faced 12% or even 18% GST, but now rates have dropped to 5% or zero for several things. For instance, ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk, paneer, breads like paratha, khakhra, chapati, roti, and pizza bases are completely GST-free. Packaged snacks, chocolates, sauces, fruit juices, and coffee now attract just 5% tax, which should boost demand and help the food industry grow.
Mother Dairy had promised to pass on these benefits, and they’re delivering. In a statement after the GST Council’s decision on September 4, Managing Director Manish Bandlish praised the move. "We welcome the government’s smart step to lower GST on dairy products like paneer, cheese, ghee, butter, UHT milk, milk beverages, and ice creams," he said. Bandlish added that this will push more people towards safe, packaged dairy options and let families enjoy nutritious products without breaking the bank.
So far, no word from Amul on price cuts, but expect other big dairy brands to follow Mother Dairy’s lead soon. With GST reforms making dairy products more affordable, it’s a win for your wallet and your morning chai! Keep an eye on your local stores for these changes.
