National conference on Defence manufacturing starts in Delhi on Tuesday

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will open a national conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, calling attention to the growing opportunities in India’s defence manufacturing sector. The event, hosted at Vigyan Bhawan and organised by the Department of Defence Production, aims to strengthen ties between the Ministry of Defence and the governments of all Indian states and union territories.

The conference will focus on aligning state industrial policies and infrastructure with the national goal of self‑reliance in defence production. It will also bring together senior officials from state departments of industry to discuss how they can support India’s expanding defence ecosystem.

During the session, Singh will launch two new online tools that are set to streamline India’s defence trade. The Defence Exim Portal will simplify the issuance of export and import authorisations, while the Srijan DEEP portal will serve as a digital catalogue of Indian defence companies’ capabilities and products. In addition, two key publications will be released: a “Aerospace & Defence Sector Policy Compendium of States and Union Territories” and the iDEX Coffee Table Book “Shared Horizons of Innovation.”

India’s defence production has jumped to a record ₹1.46 lakh crore (about $18.5 billion) last year, while exports reached a new high of ₹24,000 crore ($3.1 billion) in the 2024‑25 fiscal year. Comparatively, production was just ₹43,000 crore a decade ago, and exports were a modest ₹600‑700 crore.

“The Make‑in‑India push is not just about protection; it’s about prosperity,” Singh said. “When we used our own systems in Operation Sindoor, we proved that we can defeat any enemy armor.”

The conference underscores India’s broader strategy to boost indigenisation, increase defence exports, and attract investment in the sector, keeping the country on track towards a robust, self‑sufficient defence industry.
