Exciting news for travelers in India’s National Capital Region (NCR): Commercial flights at the new Noida International Airport in Jewar will kick off right after Diwali this year, bringing better air connectivity just in time for the festive season.
The airport’s big opening ceremony is set for October 30. Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu shared that flights will start within 45 days of the inauguration. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath echoed this, promising commercial operations before the year ends.
This Jewar Airport project moves forward in four phases. The first phase already features a single runway and a passenger terminal ready to handle up to 12 million passengers each year. Right now, teams are wrapping up key tasks like installing technical equipment, adding final touches, and doing a thorough cleanup.
An intensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) program runs alongside to make sure everything operates smoothly when planes start landing and taking off. Once all construction and tests wrap up, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will grant the aerodrome license, greenlighting full commercial service.
One standout feature? The runway meets CAT-III standards, so it can manage flights even in tough low-visibility weather, like the thick winter fog common in North India—a real game-changer for passengers.
Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) has locked in IndiGo as its first airline partner. Akasa Air plans to launch both domestic and international routes from Jewar Airport, and negotiations continue with other global carriers to join the mix.
The project hit snags from the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing back its original September 2024 launch. But by 2050, when fully built, it will boast six runways and rank as India’s biggest aviation hub, ramping up passenger traffic and cargo handling.
With flights from Noida International Airport Jewar starting post-Diwali, expect a major upgrade to Delhi-NCR air travel. This move will spark growth in trade, tourism, and investments across Uttar Pradesh, making the region even more connected.
