India’s Northeast region is finally stepping into the spotlight, thanks to the government’s Act East policy. For years, this culturally rich area stayed on the edges, held back by poor infrastructure and limited economic chances. Now, massive investments are changing that picture, boosting rail, road, air, and digital links, as a recent India Narrative report highlights.
The Northeast is evolving into a key strategic hub. It connects India directly to Southeast Asia and leads the charge in regional growth. Over the past 11 years, the government has poured five times more money into railways here—totaling Rs 62,477 crore. This year alone, it earmarks Rs 10,440 crore for tracks and trains.
These upgrades promise better connections between states and beyond borders. They make travel easier for people and spark growth in local industries like bamboo products, fruits and veggies, handicrafts, and tourism. A standout project is the Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram. Built at a cost of over Rs 8,000 crore, this 51-kilometer stretch features 143 bridges and 45 tunnels. For the first time since India’s independence, it links Aizawl to the national rail network.
Roads are getting a big lift too. Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), workers have built 80,933 kilometers of rural roads and 2,108 bridges. These paths tie remote villages to nearby cities, letting families reach hospitals, schools, and markets faster.
Air travel is soaring with the UDAN scheme, which brings affordable flights to more airports in the region. On the digital front, initiatives like BharatNet and Digital Bharat Nidhi are wiring up Gram Panchayats with high-speed internet, opening doors to online education, e-commerce, and remote work.
The momentum is building for investments in Northeast India. The recent Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025 drew pledges worth Rs 4.48 lakh crore, positioning the area as a hot spot for business.
Still, this rapid transformation isn’t without hurdles. The report warns of challenges like the region’s fragile environment, delicate social dynamics, delays in project rollout, and the need to balance security interests. As Northeast infrastructure development picks up speed, leaders must tackle these issues to ensure lasting progress.
