On Tuesday, the District Agriculture Department joined forces with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) to hold a one‑day workshop on organic farming in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir.
About a hundred farmers—both men and women—attended with lively interest, signalling a clear uptick in the area’s curiosity about natural, sustainable practices.
The session was chaired by Agriculture Officer Tejinder Singh Balwal and KVK head Dr Ajay Gupta, who led the participants through the many benefits of organic methods. They explained how abandoning chemical fertilizers can improve soil fertility and ultimately raise farmers’ long‑term income.
During the discussion, officials highlighted the need to register on the official portal, especially for those who have been practising organic farming over the past three years. Registration, they said, would unlock additional benefits, government support and updates on relevant schemes.
In remarks to LatestNewsX, Tejinder Singh Balwal revealed that the programme falls under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 10‑Cluster Scheme, aimed at expanding organic agriculture across the country.
“More than 100 farmers joined today’s training programme,” he noted, adding, “The participation has demonstrated the rising interest in adopting organic methods in the district.”
Among the attendees, farmer Mohammad Safeer proudly announced a full transition to organic farming.
“I don’t use any chemical fertilisers now,” he said.
“Organic farming gives good yields and is healthier for everyone. After Prime Minister Modi’s appeal, the Agriculture Department encouraged us to switch, and it has benefited us greatly.”
Another participant, Janakinath, echoed the message of reducing chemical inputs and embracing natural manures.
“Chemical fertilisers had hardened my soil,” he said.
“But after using organic manure, the soil quality has improved, and my crop production has also increased.”
The event wrapped up with a renewed sense of motivation. Many farmers expressed a commitment to expand their organic practices across their fields.
